Winning Nationals- Hear from Jomo Thompson!
Winning our twentieth National title this year was a remarkable and milestone accomplishment for the team and me. After finishing second last year in the competition, it was a goal of ours to make sure we reclaimed the title. The last time we have lost the title for consecutive years was 1993 and 1994. We did not want to be the team that allowed two years to past without winning a national title. So we endeavored to make sure it did not happen. I wanted our routine this year to be fast paced, action pack and of course very difficult. This year’s team had many seniors on it and they accepted the challenge to do just that. We put together, practiced and performed a routine that was among one of the best routines the Kentucky cheer program has ever competed. Of this feat we were very proud. I cannot describe the feelings of joy when they UK Cheerleaders executed their routine near flawlessly both days. As a coach I made it a point not focus on winning the competition, but instead, focus of being the best we can be each and every day; especially on those days of competition. I believed that if we were focused and in the zone on both days we could have a very special performance. I am pleased to report we did just. The team did a beautiful job of performing the routine with confidence and poise. After we came off the floor we knew we did what we wanted to do. I told the cheerleaders this year to strive for perfection and settle for excellence. I am proud to say that they did strive for excellence each and every day, and even though we did not achieve perfection, we settled for a very excellent routine!
